The Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) is a self-governing institution under the Ministry of Education (MEC), with academic, administrative, financial and asset-management autonomy. It operates on the principle that teaching, research, and community outreach are intrinsically linked, and is dedicated to working across all fields of knowledge.
Founded on May 5, 1954, UFES has four university campuses — in Goiabeiras and Maruípe, in the capital city of Vitória; and in the municipalities of Alegre, in the southern part of the state; and São Mateus, in northern Espírito Santo — with a total land area of 4.8 million square meters. Its total physical infrastructure comprises approximately 400.000 square meters of built area.
UFES offers 103 undergraduate majors, with a total of 5.000 annual enrolment slots. At the graduate level, it offers 61 master’s programs and 39 PhD programs. It has a faculty of 2.000 professors, 2.500 administrative and support staff, 20.000 undergraduate students, and 4.500 graduate students. Its administrative headquarters is located on the Goiabeiras campus in Vitória.
In scientific and technological research, UFES has an average of 8.000 ongoing projects per year, and through its university extension program, it has developed 850 projects and programs in all municipalities in the state of Espírito Santo, serving around 4 million people.
UFES offers a variety of services to the academic community and the general public, including theater, cinema, art galleries, a language centre, libraries, a planetarium and astronomical observatory, auditoriums, a sports gymnasium, and other athletic facilities.
It also provides health services through the Cassiano Antonio Moraes University Hospital (Hucam), covering various medical specialties, and serves as a referral centre for medium- and high-complexity care.
