The Federal University of Espírito Santo was founded in 1954. It currently has 2.000 academic staff, of whom 1.460 hold PhDs; 2.500 administrative and support staff; 20.000 undergraduate students; and 4.500 postgraduate students.

The institution offers 103 undergraduate courses, accepting 5.000 students per year.  

In total UFES provides 61 master 's programs and 39 PhD programs.

Through its extension programmes, UFES manages around 850 projects, serving 4 million people.

The UFES Integrated Library System comprises eight branches spread across the four campuses, with a collection of 419.173 books and 178.697 titles.

Its University Hospital – Cassiano Antonio Moraes (Hucam) – has 244 beds (including inpatient and day-case treatment) and 2.474 staff members. Hucam carries out, annually, 11.247 admissions, 11.090 surgeries, around 1.500 deliveries, 212.747 medical consultations, 15.000 urgent and emergency care visits, and 878.916 laboratory tests.

There are four campuses: Goiabeiras and Maruípe, in Vitória; Alegre, in the south of Espírito Santo; and São Mateus, in the north of Espírito Santo.

The total land area of the four campuses is 4.8 million square meters with its total physical infrastructure comprising approximately 400.000 square meters of built area.
